Hillsboro School District expects to lay off teachers in 2013-14 for the first time after years of relying on resignations and retirements to reduce staff because of budget cuts.

Hundreds get layoff notices at Dignity Health medical lab

On the heels of last month’s announced deal calling for Dignity Health to sell its lab-related outreach service to Quest Diagnostics, Dignity has issued layoff notices to more than 500 workers, including 319 working for Stockton’s HealthCare Clinical Laboratories.

House of Raeford Inc. has informed state officials that it will close a poultry processing facility in Hoke County in July, eliminating more than 1,000 jobs.The company filed the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notices with the state Department of Commerce last Friday. Boeing to cut 1,500 jobs in Puget Sound

Boeing announced it will reduce 1,500 information technology positions in the Puget Sound region over the next three years, said Boeing spokesman Andrew Favreau.

Favreau said the cuts will come through a combination of layoffs, attrition from retirements, relocation of some jobs and new opportunities for employees within the company.

The first layoff notices went out in March.

The cuts will affect almost a third of the total 4,700 Boeing IT positions in the Puget Sound.

Tobyhanna Army Depot in PA to layoff 400 civilian contract workers

A northeastern Pennsylvania military base says it will lay off more than 400 civilian contract workers.

Tobyhanna Army Depot in Monroe County said today that layoffs will begin Friday and continue through the end of April.

Tobyhanna blames some of the layoffs on decreased workload from the end of the war in Iraq. Officials say the budget impasse in Washington is also playing a role.

The Army installation has previously announced plans to furlough more than 5,000 employees.

Boeing plans to cut up to 2,300 jobs

The Boeing Company says it will cut up to 2,300 jobs by the end of 2013 in line with plans to mainly downsize the production line of its cutting-edge 787 Dreamliner jets.

According to a statement released by the Chicago-based company on Friday, the cuts will also target the production line of Boeing’s 747 aircraft.

The 787 Dreamliners have been grounded since mid-January due to a battery problem.

EPA rules kill Texas power plant, 3,900 jobs

Environmental Protection Agency regulations are snuffing out another power plant, Chase Power announced Wednesday, killing its $3 billion Corpus Christi, Texas, coal project and 3,900 prospective jobs.

“Chase Power … has opted to suspend efforts to further permit the facility and is seeking alternative investors as part of a plan of dissolution for the parent company,” Chase CEO Dave Freysinger said in a statement to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.
