Well if you liked going to Sams Club and getting a free sample of cheese or shrimp those days are over for now.
Walmart who owns Sams Club Warehouse has decided to cut 11,200 jobs in their stores. Most of the cuts will come from the sample merchandisers who are part-time employees and about 1500 of the jobs will come from staff that try to recruit new members.
With the push to open more Super Walmarts and closing of older Walmart stores it is a wonder that Sam’s Club is not on the chopping block all together.
Anyone who has shopped Sams and Walmart will tell you that the selection at Sams is poor with the exception of bulk merchandise and gasoline sales.
Additionally when the same product is available at both stores the Walmart price will always be lower. This is unreasonable considering members pay $40 to over $100 a year for the chance to shop at Sams Club.
Next time you are at either store check out the price of produce or tires in their auto center. Tires at Sams are more expensive and although they carry a different line at each store the lowest price tire rated for any vehicle will always be found at Walmart with comparable specs… 14 inch Firestone brand rated at 50,000 miles $50 walmart $70 Sams Club….
If Walmart simply offered a selection of bulk food products and gasoline then Sams Club would not be necessary.
However the Sams Club Division brings in about 55 Billion dollars a year.. making it larger then many other national chains and fortune 500 companies just on its own.
The cuts are expected to mean nothing to the businesses bottom line however the thousands of people that count on that paycheck just lost their source of income…
Lets hope that they are the first selected to get jobs at other stores within the company….
Walmart on average has a 110% turnover rate in their staff every year… meaning that of the 1 million employees that work for walmart every year 1 million 100 thousand new hires happen within the business… considering the ratio of managers to employees is 1 out of 10 that is a lot of people losing or quitting jobs working at Walmart.
