National donut-maker Krispy Kreme has been fined $40,000 related to the hiring of illegal aliens at its factory in Monroe.
Investigations into the plant’s hiring began in October 2006 after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement got a tip from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

Employers have a responsibility to hire men and women who are authorized to work in the United States and fines are an important component of ensuring their compliance,” said Brian Moskowitz, an agent with ICE.

Investigators with ICE determined that 25 unauthorized workers were employed at the Monroe plant — the facility currently employs about 90 workers.

Krispy Kreme has said it will update its hiring practices to prevent the hiring of illegal immigrants.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones, who is known for his tough stance against illegal immigration, said he is pleased with the decision.
