Michigan Legislators voted to make cuts to the Promise Scholarship last week.

The program that started in 2006 provides $4,000 to approximately 70,000 students that attend college in the state.

Originally promoted as a way to increase the number of people who would attend figures over the past 3 years show only a slight improvement.Almost all of the money went to students who would have attended college with or without the scholarship.

Hit with budget problems the state has decided to make cuts to the program.

It is unfortunate for everyone. Providing a scholarship that does not improve attendance requires higher taxes for all citizens. At the same time Colleges increase in state tuition because they know that students can afford to spend more if they are provided a guaranteed scholarship.

This circular mindless application of good intentions results in government produced inflation for everyone in the state.
