Employers must announce and report mass layoffs of more then 50 workers to government offices and future major layoffs dropped by 15% last month. Although this number may sound assuring the same year layoff numbers are more then double what they were last year.
The records of Mass Layoffs should also be compared to the total layoffs. Small and mid sized companies are often exempt from reporting and although the total number of layoffs reported this year was just over 800,000 the total number of job losses is closer to 3 million jobs in just the past 4 months.
Have we reached the abyss and started our way back up?
This Friday Federal Government reports will show over 500,000 jobs were lost last month. This is a number that equals the total population of many major American cities.
It is really difficult to say that there is any improvement when that many people lose jobs that probably won’t be coming back any time soon.
