The Department of Education collects information about on campus crime and this information is available to the public.
Every Student and Parents of Prospective Students should review this database when making choices for college.
Schools may seem falsely safe because they are located in a suburban or rural area or because the campus is protected by security. You must always remember that students come to colleges from every location of the country and the world and they bring along the problems they had. Criminal background checks are not a usual part of college entrance requirements. Additionally with all of the drug and alcohol problems on every campus even the so called good kids back in high school can easily turn dangerous and criminal.
This is just a fact of life that you need to understand.
The link below will bring you to the Department of Education’s Website. The navigation of the system is rather difficult so take a few minutes to look for the right links to click “they are not in user friendly layouts”.
Remember these statistics do not include crimes committed in apartments, bars and restaurants or any locations outside of the total control of the college. If a regular police officer was called first then the statistics will not be shown. If the college quiet-ups the prosecution the statistics will not be shown and many crimes go unreported. If you see there are Rapes Murders or other Violent crimes you can expect that the statistics are higher and if you see thefts or nonviolent crimes reported you can expect those statistics to be much much higher.
Your safety is your responsibility and if you feel unsafe then take that to heart. Walk in groups, Take Self Defence Classes and stay alert meaning if you are not 21 there is no reason for you to be drunk because that is the easiest way for you to get hurt either by your own actions or the idiots around you.
The best way to keep yourself out of trouble is to have a preplanned excuse for why you can not go to that party or why you need to leave immediately. Make one up like: Your Boss just called you are needed at work, Your Parents need you to go home this weekend., You have a test or paper that is 2 weeks past due and you are about to fail the class., You can’t drink because you went on vacation last summer and got sick and ended up in the hospital for 3 weeks your doctor says your liver can not take it for at least the next 3 years (which also happens to coincide with your 21st birthday), You can’t do drugs because they will interact with a prescription you are taking …. (GET A MEDICAL DICTIONARY or find a doctor and ask them what lie you can use in this situation, do what you need to to protect yourself and plan the lie before you need it.)
I am not a fan of lies but when it means you are protecting yourself from idiots then do it.
People that like you will never be offended when you turn down drugs or drinks. Idiots that pressure you or make a big deal about it are the ones you need to use an excuse on and then cross them off your friends list.
If you have a personal choice to drink then you also need this tool because you never want to get hammered with a bunch of people you don’t know. You wouldn’t just drive across your town and party with people you didn’t grow up with would you? Well this is what you are doing at college and you are basing friendships on minutes and hours not years of time. Never get so drunk that you couldn’t leave alone and feel 100% safe walking home.
So, enough with the speach… just take it to heart because it is true.
At least one person you know will get hurt at college.
Don’t let it be you.
