InternshipsUndergraduate students can apply for summer internships working in one of the Museum’s departments. Interns work directly with Museum staff conducting research, designing and building exhibits, preserving or restoring artifacts, or developing educational materials.

 The National Air and Space Museum offers an exciting work experience to college and university students through its Summer Internship Program. Interns have a firsthand opportunity to learn about the historic artifacts and archival materials housed in the Museum and to study the scientific and technological advances they represent.

 

Each year positions are available in a variety of Museum departments such as Aircraft Restoration, Aviation or Space History, Planetary Science, Collections Management, Exhibit Design, Public Relations, and Education. Students from all fields of study are encouraged to apply.

A commitment of 10 weeks during the summer is required. Full-time interns work 40 hours per week from approximately the first week in June until the second week in August. A $4,500 stipend is provided to help interns defray expenses.

Fellowships

Pre- and post-doctoral research fellowships are offered in the Museum’s research divisions.

The National Air and Space Museum offers a variety of fellowships for predoctoral, postdoctoral, and non-academic researchers. Applicants are reviewed by National Air and Space Museum research staff. Ranking factors that govern selection include the scholarly merits of the proposal, research and academic record of the applicant, potential use of museum collection and facilities, and availability of research staff to serve as advisors. National Air and Space Museum Fellows are guided by the research staff of the museum and are encouraged to use the facilities and collections of the museum. Applicants are encouraged to contact prospective staff advisors prior to submitting a proposal.Please note: Applicants are restricted to applying for a single fellowship grant at a time. Proposals must reflect that the research to be undertaken is intended for publication in peer-reviewed books and journals.
