CompUSA Closes and gets Liquidated

In a somewhat surprising announcement CompUSA one of America’s Largest Retailers has been sold to Gordon Brothers Group an asset liquidation company.

Rumors have been going around for some time that many of the consumer electronics and computer related brick and mortar chains have been seeing losses.

This was expected as Internet retail companies established their credentials but for many buyers the ability to walk into a store and walk out with your items is still an important part of shopping.

CompUSA is said to have had approximately 1000 Corporate employees in their Texas offices and at the time of sale 103 retail stores.

Another untold secret of CompUSA was that it was purchased by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim. This makes the evaluation of this sale difficult because although it will hurt a number of managers the long term impact on lower wage workers will probably be absorbed into the market.

On a personal note prior to its purchase in 2000 by Carlos Slim CompUSA was one of the driving forces of America’s Technology Industry. The wide range of products they carried including technical books really drove the acceptance of computers in small business and homes.

From the mid 1990’s to 2000 was a time where many people purchased their first computer and the Internet was expanding exponentially.

Their Free After Rebate sales were a genius of marketing which all other stores had to follow and match.

It is unfortunate that Carlos Slim could not continue what made CompUSA great but that is what happens when a successful company is purchased by someone who did not join the battle from the beginning.

CompUSA has never been its self since its takeover in 2000 so saying goodbye is really just a horah and expectation for what may come to fill its place.

Does anyone know of any good deals this weekend?
